What I think is great is that some people seem to not know that the main reason for the pay gap is the fact that women can get pregnant and usually take maternity leave at one point in time during their career. Sure, the “male privilege” thing may be a part of it, but the big reason is that there are at least 9 months or so that a woman isn’t working compared to a man. Inb4 Men taking maternity leave
Assuming that a woman, by virtue of being a woman, is going to get pregnant and sponge money from the company/government is in and of itself pretty atrociously sexist. I’ve heard some pretty horrible stories of female scientists applying for grants and being turned down on the basis of “you’ll just get pregnant and quit science”. Actually, on the subject of that Irene Pepperberg post from earlier, her book talks about that exact thing happening to her when she was looking for grants. I’m sure it’s also the reason my 14-year-old self got the lower janitor rate.
And yeah, like you mentioned, guys can get the same compassionate family leave to stay home and raise the babies that moms can.
